The time it takes to get divorced varies from state to state and from county to county within each state. This variation is, generally, a function of the procedural and substantive law in each state, the number of judges allocated to the family court, and the density of the population in a particular location.
The process can be shortened when the parties cooperate. Thus, a fair exchange of information, without having to involve the court in discovery matters, and can certainly shorten the process. Reaching an agreement with your spouse can also shorten the process. An overwhelming number of divorce cases are settled by way of an agreement and do not proceed to trial. To shorten the process, you and your spouse can attempt to reach an agreement earlier, rather than later.
