Women who complain that their husbands should do more housework may want to re-think that lament, now that researchers in Norway have discovered that the divorce rate amount spouses who split housework duties 50/50 was higher than households where women did the lion’s share of the chores.
“The more a man does in the home, the higher the divorce rate,” stated Thomas Hansen, co-author of the study Equality in the Home.
However, men who have their finger poised on the “print screen” button and eagerly look forward to showing this article to their significant other may want to hold off – because, while researchers admit there’s a correlation here, they don’t go as far as suggesting causation.
In other words, marriages that are currently on the rocks aren’t likely to get better if men suddenly start trading in the vacuum cleaner for a seat on the couch. In fact, they’ll probably get worse.
So what is the heralded correlation? According to researchers, it’s rooted in an expression of what they call “modern” attitudes.
“Modern couples are just that, both in the way they divide up the chores and in their perception of marriage as being less sacred,” commented Hansen. “In these modern couples, women also have a high level of education and a well-paid job, which makes them less dependent on their spouse financially. They can manage much easier if they divorce.”
