There are so many cliche sayings and songs about breaking up because the world knows having a broken heart is one of the worst feelings in the world. Nobody has the courage to tell you that in those moments of heartache you’re not being yourself. Your brain keeps looking to the past, preserving those memories because that’s all they’ll ever be now. Your ex spouse is not your future. However, you still are. To get you out of the breakup blues you need to pick up new hobbies. This is your time to rediscover yourself after your divorce. If you’re having a hard time seeing anything through those tears, here are some ideas to get your creative thoughts going.
Here Are New Hobbies to Help Get You Through Your Breakup
1. Experimental Cooking
Going through a divorce doesn’t mean you get to lay in bed weeping while stuffing your face with chocolates. This is your time to do something big with a new hobby. When you break up with someone, or they break up with you, you’ve found an opportunity to create something extremely outrageous. For example, have you ever tried making cannabis butter? You can do that now because you need an outlet for all that pain.
Go cook something you’ve never made before and enjoy it. Be sure to smile, because you’re moving on with new foods you never would have had the courage to try had you still been in that stifling relationship.
2. Mural Painting
There’s a reason art therapy became a respected area of study. It’s because creating art is therapeutic and a wonderful hobby. Why mural painting? Because it’s big and expressive and it can be created anywhere. The oldest mural discovered is over 40,000 years old, and nobody can tell you the person who created it wasn’t also recovering from a breakup!
Mural making isn’t just for the ancients. You’ve probably heard of Frida Kahlo. Well, she wasn’t a muralist, but her husband Diego Rivera was. During their lives, he was the big star in the family. Their relationship was tumultuous, which may be what helped make their art so great.
3. Vlogging
If you’re more expressive with digital media, you could have a go at vlogging (or video blogging). Anyone can do it and you don’t need a license or credentials. You just need a video camera or smartphone.
Vlogging has become incredibly popular over the last few years. So much so that people who were once heartbroken like you are now making lots of money. The point isn’t the money – it’s the free expression. You can even complain about your ex and share it with the world.
4. Horticulture
Plants are like cats – but without the attitude. They really don’t need you until they’re thirsty or hungry. They’re also really pretty and addictive once you know what you’re doing, but be careful. Horticulture can get you into serious trouble. You may start with potted plants but then end up with greenhouses, lily pads in ponds, and koi fish. Nonetheless, this is a great new hobby to pick up and will keep you occupied while you build something beautiful.
5. Upholstery
Have you looked at your furniture lately? Everyone has at least one or two pieces that could use a facelift. Or maybe your dining room set could benefit from new seats. All you need is a little ambition and a sewing machine, and you can start making your house look like the cover of Elle Decor. You may even find a new career in this!
Frankie Avalon and the Four Seasons sang a song about how breaking up is hard to do. What he didn’t tell you is that moving on with new hobbies is all the rage. Your mind needs to be introduced to new experiences so it has something to focus on that’s in the future instead of the past. Forget the ex and introduce your brain to butter, horticulture, or something else.
