Positive Habits to Develop When Going Through Divorce
Developing some useful new habits – such as eliminating negative thoughts & people from your life – will help you get through this difficult time.
I’ve been a divorce attorney for over 30 years. That’s a long time, and also a lot of clients whom I’ve had the pleasure and the privilege to work with. Because of them, I’ve put together a list of some positive habits to develop when going through divorce.
Habits You Should Develop When Going Through Divorce
1. Engage in Positive Self-Talk
I find that when a lot of people come into my office looking for a divorce, they judge themselves.
Sometimes they judge themselves for overspending, not working enough, or not developing their children’s careers. Don’t do that. Focus on the positive, tell yourself the things that are going to help you move forward in your life, and don’t punish yourself for what feels like or might feel like past mistakes.
2. Be Proactive, Not Reactive
Another positive habit is to think about what you really want in your life and how to get it, instead of constantly being in reaction to the circumstances, the divorce itself, your soon-to-be ex-spouse, or even what’s going on in the world.
Constantly thinking negatively is a guaranteed way to feel crappy about things all the time. Never let someone or something dictate the way you feel and the way you act.
3. Look for Solutions
Instead of focusing on the problem, look for ways to get through this difficult time. I don’t mean to go too quickly. You don’t want to overlook the details, but make sure that you focus on finding a resolution. Think about what the future will hold after divorce and what your life will look like.
The Takeaway
Going through divorce is never easy. It can take you through emotional turmoil that can leave you feeling defeated and lost. This is why it is so important to develop healthy habits that help you through the healing process as you start your new life after divorce. Remember to stay focused on the present, as well as things you can change. Trust the process and work diligently to be nice to yourself during this difficult time.
Think positive thoughts and don’t let the bad days get you down. Talk to people who support and love you, and eliminate any negative thoughts and people from your life. In time, you will start to notice drastic changes in your life that will help you heal.
You will get through this.
