Canadian rock star Avril Lavigne has a new reason to sing “When You’re Gone”. It’s because her husband is now gone, officially.
The punk-pop singer, 26, and Sum 41 lead singer/guitarist Deryck Whibley finalized their divorce in Los Angeles on Tuesday. According to court records, the former couple came to an agreement over property division, including their respective song catalogs, awards and guitars. Neither party will pay spousal support to the other.
Lavigne and Whibley became friends in 2002 and began dating in 2004. Whibley proposed to her in June 2005 during a trip to Venice, and they married in Montecito, California in July 2006. The couple announced their separation in September 2009, with Lavigne’s divorce filing following on October 9 last year. She cited irreconcilable differences.
According to the Toronto Star, Lavigne has been dating Brody Jenner following her breakup with Whibley. Jenner hosted the reality-TV series Bromance last year. Whibley briefly dated Paris Hilton in 2003.
Derek Whibley, 30, finished the Warped Tour 2010 with Sum 41 in August. The Ajax, Ontario-based band, which has won two Juno Awards, expects to release their fifth studio album, tentatively titled Screaming Bloody Murder, soon. Avril Lavigne was still a teenager when she burst onto the international music scene in 2002 with the hit single “Complicated” and the album Let Go. Other hits include “Sk8er Boi” and “Girlfriend”.
