Looks like marriage wasn’t The Best Damn Thing after all. You could even say it was too Complicated for her and she decided to Let Go.
Canadian punk-pop sensation Avril Lavigne announced on her website Thursday that she was separating from her husband of three years, Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley. Her post came after Us Weekly reported that they had broken up, following months of media rumors.
“Deryck and I have been together for six and a half years,” Lavigne, who will turn 25 next weekend, wrote in the web post. “I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship. I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him. He is the most amazing person I know and I love him with all my heart.”
Lavigne then said that she and Whibley were “moving forward on a positive note” and thanked her family, friends, and fans for their support.
Whibley confirmed the split on Sum 41’s MySpace blog shortly afterward. “Our decision to part ways is amicable.” he posted. “The past six and a half years have been the most amazing years of my life. It’s sad it has come to an end, but Avril and I are still family and moving forward in the most positive way possible.”
Whibley, 29, and Lavigne began dating in February 2004 and became engaged in June the following year. They married in July 2006 in Montecito, California, in a Catholic ceremony.
Ajax, Ontario-based Sum 41’s last album, Underclass Hero, reached number one in . An as-yet-untitled new album is planned for release next year.
Avril Lavigne, who grew up in Napanee, Ontario, shot to international stardom at the age of 17 with her debut album, Let Go. Her hit singles include “Complicated”, “Sk8erboi”, and “Girlfriend”. She is also working on a new album scheduled for 2010.
