Steve Nash is a new dad, but he’s about to become a single one.
The Canadian-raised NBA player, currently a point guard with the Phoenix Suns, announced the birth of his son, Matteo Joel, to Life & Style magazine on Friday — coupled with the revelation that he and wife Alejandra Amarilla have been living apart for several months and are getting a divorce.
“I am very thankful and excited that we have a new son, Matteo Nash,” Nash, 36, said in a statement to the magazine. “Alejandra and the baby are doing fine. But this is a bittersweet moment for my wife and I; after five years, we are now in the process of dissolving our marriage.
“While we have lived separately for the past several months,” the statement continued, “we remain firmly committed to raising our children in the most positive, nurturing way possible. I want only good things for Ale going forward; right now, I’m focused on ensuring that our children understand how much they’re loved and adored by us as they continue to adjust to these changes.
“I would ask that their privacy, and ours as a family, be respected as we move forward. This will be my only statement on this.”
Matteo Nash is the couple’s third child. They also have six-year-old twin daughters, Bella and Lola.
Nash and Amarilla first met in 2001 and married in June 2005.
Born in South Africa and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Steve Nash is a seven-time NBA All-Star and two-time league MVP. After beginning his NBA career with the Suns in 1996, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he played for six seasons before returning to Phoenix in 2004. Time magazine ranked him as one of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2006.
