FALMOUTH, ENGLAND — If it’s true that you’re never too old tofall in love, it’s only logical that you’re never too old to fall out of it, either. Such is the case with an elderly couple from the county of Cornwall in England, who set a new world record this year as the oldest couple in history to get a divorce. Both were 98 years old at the time of the split. The late Bertie Wood, who passed away just before turning 99, and Jessie Wood received a decree absolute earlier this year. The Woods married in 1972 in Elstree, Hertfordshire and moved to Falmouth, Cornwall in 1976. Their marriage ended last year for reasons that have not been publicly disclosed. |
Both of the Woods had been married previously and had children from their first marriages.
“It’s too hurtful to talk about,” Pauline Rowe, Jessie Wood’s daughter, told News of the World about the divorce this week.
“At that age, you’d think you’d find some way of getting on with each other,” British divorce expert Francine Kaye said about the Woods’ relationship, as quoted in the Daily Mail.
Jessie Wood now lives in a nursing home, according to former neighbors of the Woods.
Ironically enough, another British couple set a new national record for the oldest newlyweds in October. The world record for oldest couple to marry belongs to France’s François Fernandez and Madeleine Francineau, who were 96 and 94 respectively when they wed in 2002.
