While technically you can handle a divorce yourself, it is not recommended. Family law attorneys have expertise in the field and can provide you with proper advice and recommendations that will ultimately be worth the cost. It is no different than hiring a mechanic to repair your car or going to a doctor because you have a physical ailment. Many times individuals believe they can represent themselves in divorce cases, but end up seeking out an attorney after the fact for the nearly impossible task of trying to undo a settlement or appeal a decision that was not made in their favor.
Be sure to conduct research and contact the attorney before hiring him or her. Discuss the attorney’s qualifications, ask about their approach to handling cases, and determine if you are comfortable with this person. You need to feel confident that you are getting quality advice from an attorney who practices in the court where your case is located and who has experience both in and out of the courtroom in litigating and settling cases.
