July 10, 2013: Charles Saatchi Tells Nigella Lawson About Their Divorce Through The Daily Mail
Multi-millionaire businessman Charles Saatchi and his television chef wife Nigella Lawson made headlines about a month ago when he was photographed grabbing her neck at a London celebrity restaurant. After a short separation he announced this past Sunday via the Daily Mail that he had made the “heartbreaking” decision to end their ten-year marriage.
The fallout of their marriage goes back to the incident which happened in June at the Mayfair restaurant Scott’s, when pictures taken of Saatchi with his hands on his wife’s throat circulated widely. When asked by Lawson’s PR advisor to apologize publicly he refused, which led to an argument where he told Lawson to “pack up and go.”
After weeks of Lawson living outside of the family home, Saatchi gave a statement to the Daily Mail on July 7th which revealed part of the reason for their split:
“I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way.”
The pressure of being continually in the public eye was compounded by actions such as Saatchi going to Charing Cross police station to admit assault only to later tell the London Evening Standard that this was simply a “playful tiff.” There is no simple reason for the couple’s divorce, but The Daily Mail has compiled the many reasons they believe led up to it.
