Less than six months after finalizing her divorce from aspiring politician Craig Schelske, Sara Evans is already warming up to get back in the marriage game — with a quarterback on her team to boot. The country star’s publicist announced on March 25 that Evans has gotten engaged to former football player and current radio personality Jay Barker.
“The couple are enjoying their engagement,” spokesperson Lori Genes, Evans’ publicist at Sony BMG Nashville, said in a press statement, “and look forward to their upcoming nuptials.” Genes did not reveal the wedding date, however, according to the Associated Press.
The “Suds in the Bucket” singer, 37, was married to Schelske for 13 years before she filed for divorce in October 2006. Their case lasted nearly a year and was rife with nasty allegations from both sides, including accusations of verbal abuse and repeated infidelity.
Barker played college football for the University of Alabama and helped their team win the national championship in 1993. He later played professionally for teams in three different leagues — the New England Patriots, the Toronto Argonauts, and the Birmingham Thunderbolts. He now co-hosts a morning show, Opening Drive, on Birmingham’s WJOX Radio and is an analyst for ESPN Radio.
Barker, 35, recently underwent a divorce as well. He has four children from his previous marriage; Evans has three from hers.
Evans’ other past hits include “No Place That Far”, “Born to Fly”, and “Perfect”. She released a Greatest Hits compilation in October that included four new songs.
Of course no marriage or relationship is ever Perfect, but let’s hope Evans and Barker can work it out this time. For one marriage counselor’s take on unique aspects to remarriage, click here.
