The run of good luck just keeps on going for actor-singer Jennifer Hudson. The Oscar-winning star of Dreamgirls and former American Idol finalist now has become engaged, People reported on September 14.
“I can confirm that Jennifer got engaged to her boyfriend, David, on Friday night in L.A.,” Hudson’s publicist told the magazine. Hudson has been dating David Otunga for less than a year. Otunga, 28, is a former lawyer who has appeared as “Punk” on the VH1 reality series I Love New York 2.
According to the report, Otunga proposed to Hudson on her 27th birthday on September 12, giving her a Neil Lane diamond ring.
Hudson’s last long-term relationship was with James Payton, from 1999 to December 2007. Hudson, Payton, and Otunga all hail from Chicago.
Jennifer Hudson finished in seventh place on American Idol in April 2004. She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe in 2007 for her performance in the musical Dreamgirls, at about the same time her single, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” (from the movie’s soundtrack), peaked on the charts.
