Malta – The government was accused of failing to make the necessary preparations for the introduction of divorce next Sunday by the Labour Party.
PL spokesman for Justice Jose Herrera said no investment has been made in resources to cater for the new right in the courts.
According to reports, the workload at the Family Court had increased substantially in the past few years and divorce cases would now fall under its responsibility.
Dr. Herrera said it’s no secret that there’s a backlog and several people are waiting too long for a decision and such delays were negatively affecting people’s lives.
Additionally, there had been no increase in resources to help with mediation, which was also included in the divorce law.
The PL spokesman said such matters are bound to have serious repercussions on the administration of justice.
In a hotly-contested referendum last May, the majority voted in favor of divorce and it was introduced afterwards.
