Legendary punk-rock lead guitarist for bands Bad Religion and Circle Jerks, Greg Hetson, 52, has filed for divorce from his estranged wife, Alia Hetson, 28, on the grounds of “irreconcilable differences” after several public incidents of mutual accusations of domestic abuse.
In late July, Alia obtained a protective restraining order against her husband, claiming that he violently threw her to the ground during an explosive argument. Greg Hetson filed his own restraining order in response, accusing her of repeated acts of violence, including attacking him with a clothes hanger, shoving an apple core into his mouth, using hockey equipment as a weapon, and an incident where she allegedly shoved him out of their car, dragging him along as she drove off. Hetson’s allegations also claim that his wife stole $18,000 from their joint bank account, and that he has put up with his wife’s “unstable and violent” behaviour since the couple was married in 2011. A representative on Alia’s behalf has denied all allegations of abuse on her part. Considering the nasty incidents and allegations leading to their divorce, the marriage is likely to be finalized through lengthy and expensive litigation in California courts.
As the couple has no children together and have been married for only 2 years, the California court may heed Hetson’s wishes to not award his wife spousal support. California alimony laws generally award spousal support for half the time of the marriage, and up to 40% of the paying partner’s gross net worth, which would leave Alia with a hefty monthly paycheck. Hetson has a 16 year old daughter, Violet, with his former wife, Shannon. Bad Religion is currently touring Europe, playing in London, England and Tilburg, Netherlands during August.
