The rumors are true: Lizzie McGuire has grown up. Actor/singer Hilary Duff is going to get married to National Hockey League player Mike Comrie.
“Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie were engaged this [past] weekend while vacationing in Hawaii,” Duff’s publicist, Nanci Ryder, wrote in an e-mail that Comrie’s NHL team, the Edmonton Oilers, forwarded to People and the Associated Press yesterday.
“After having been together for over two years, they are very excited to share this happy news,” Ryder added. “They are thankful for all of your warm wishes.”
The Lizzie McGuire star began dating Comrie, 29, in 2007. That September, Comrie bought a Mercedes-Benz as a 20th birthday gift for Duff. She has reportedly been a frequent attendee at Comrie’s games — and even read Hockey for Dummies to better understand the sport, according to People.
This will be the first marriage for both. Duff has previously dated singers Aaron Carter and Joel Madden.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Mike Comrie returned to the Oilers last September after several years switching between various other NHL teams, including the Phoenix Coyotes, Ottawa Senators, and New York Islanders. He plays center.
Hilary Duff, 22, became a star in her teens as the title character in the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, which spun off a movie in 2003. She also starred in the films Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen, A Cinderella Story, and The Perfect Man. Duff also had a recurring role on the series Gossip Girl late last year. She will appear next in the indie comedy Stay Cool.
