Jennifer Lopez may say she’s still “Jenny from the Block,” but how many of us can stop our exes from saying bad things about us — and receive more than half a million dollars from them for our troubles? Recently, the 38-year-old singer/actor sued her former husband to stop him from publishing a memoir of their marriage. She won an award of $545,000, according to AFP.
Court papers, made public on August 8 in Los Angeles, revealed that Lopez filed a lawsuit against ex-husband Ojani Noa, 31, for breach of contract. Arbitrator Richard Chernick said in a written ruling that Noa’s unpublished tell-all book violated the couple’s settlement agreement, which stated that he would not publicly disclose personal info about the marriage for monetary gain. He had agreed to this in a preliminary injunction more than a year earlier. But Lopez claimed that Noa had offered not to publish the memoir if she paid him $5 million.
The ruling also issued a permanent injunction that prohibits Noa from “criticizing, denigrating, casting in a negative light, or otherwise disparaging” his ex-wife. “The book proposal clearly contains material that violates the terms referenced [in] the settlement agreement,” Chernick added.
Noa’s book allegedly claims that J.Lo had several affairs during their marriage — including one with singer Marc Anthony, her current husband.
The payout includes $200,000 in compensatory damages, almost $300,000 in lawyers’ fees, and close to $48,000 in arbitration costs. The ruling also ordered Noa to hand over all copies of materials related to the book to Lopez.
Lopez and Noa married in 1997. The union lasted for 11 months.
The former “Fly Girl” currently has a net worth of more than $110 million, according to Forbes. She has recently finished shooting two indie films, Bordertown and El Cantante; the latter also stars Anthony.
