Will Jon & Kate Plus 8 become a split family in the near future? That’s been the speculation for the past several weeks, as marital strains plague the Gosselins on camera and off during the fifth season of their TLC reality series.
The trouble started in April, when Us Weekly spotted Jon Gosselin, not wearing his wedding band, partying at a Wernersville, Pennsylvania nightclub with several women and leaving with one of them. Jon, 32, later denied that he was having an affair with 23-year-old schoolteacher Deanna Hummel, saying that the woman was a long-time friend. But Hummel’s older brother confirmed the affair with Us.
The May 25 season premiere of Jon & Kate Plus 8 added to media speculation that the couple was breaking apart. In the episode, which featured the family sextuplets’ fifth birthday party, the couple arrived separately and hardly said a word to each other. Jon Gosselin still claimed he had been “innocent and hanging out” with Hummel.
His wife has been away from home frequently to promote Multiple Blessings, her new book. “So he’s angry with me that he’s home and I’m not. Yet he doesn’t really feel great about me, so he wants me to travel,” Kate Gosselin said in the episode, which received a record 9.8 million viewers.
A National Enquirer story from May 27 said that the couple plans to be legally separated by July 15. “Jon is going to push for half of their money,” an insider supposedly told the tabloid, “but Kate is determined to hang on to as much as she can — and they’re worth more than you think.
“Needless to say,” the insider added, “there’s a small fortune at stake here — easily $10 million.”
Jon and Kate Gosselin met at a picnic in October 1997 and married on June 12, 1999. Kate Gosselin gave birth to twins on October 8, 2000 and sextuplets on May 10, 2008. The Gosselins also have two German Shepherds. The family lives in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.
