D’oh! Eight-year-old Lisa Simpson may be the smartest and most socially conscious character on the long-running animated sitcom The Simpsons, but even she couldn’t save the marriage of the woman behind her voice. Actor Yeardley Smith, who has voiced the cartoon character since 1987, is getting a divorce from her husband of about six years, Daniel Erickson.
Smith, 43, cited irreconcilable differences when she submitted her divorce papers on May 21 in Los Angeles Superior Court, celebrity-news website TMZ.com has reported.
Their date of separation is “under determination”, and Smith has requested that she not have to pay spousal support. She has been using the legal name “Yeardley Smith Erickson” since her marriage and plans to drop “Erickson” after the divorce is final.
The couple has no children. Smith had previously been married to actor Christopher Grove, from 1990 to 1992.
Yeardley Smith has voiced Lisa Simpson ever since the early The Simpsons shorts on FOX-TV’s The Tracey Ullman Show. The role won her an Emmy award in 1992. She also had live-action roles on the sitcoms Herman’s Head and Dharma and Greg.
