Aug. 27, 2014: Canadian Legend Neil Young Files for Divorce After 36 Years of Marriage
Canadian music icon Neil Young has filed for divorce from his wife Pegi Young after three-and-a-half decades of marriage. Originally from Toronto, Ontario, the Canadian music legend and his American-born wife have been married for 36 years.
News of the singer songwriter’s pending divorce first broke Tuesday evening when Rolling Stone reported that Neil had filed for divorce in California on July 29th. Up until their separation, the couple had lived together in San Mateo, California.
The 68-year-old Canuck, whose music career has outlived his marriage, has been in the industry for an impressive 45 years. His most recent album, A Letter Home, was released this spring. It is speculated that many of the most touching love songs Young has written over the years were inspired by his relationship with Pegi, including “Once an Angel” and “Such a Woman.”
Throughout his extensive career, Young rose to fame in Canada and internationally, releasing more than 30 albums, winning several Juno Awards, and earning a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. In 2011, Young won the Juno for Artist of the Year.
In 2007, Pegi also began launching her own career in music and has since released 3 solo albums.
Neil and Pegi have two children, a daughter and son, together. The couple’s son, Ben, has cerebral palsy and his condition motivated Pegi to found a non-profit organization called the Bridge School for children with speech and physical impairments.
Young also has a child from a previous romantic relationship with the late American actress Carrie Snodgress.
Neil and Pegi’s divorce hearing is set to take place in December.
