Pop singers Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston may have settled their divorce almost a year ago, but Brown just won’t let some things go. The “My Prerogative” singer has co-authored a tell-all autobiography, Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But…, which dishes the dirt on his troubled marriage to Houston.
The New York Post reported details from Brown’s book (written with Derrick Handspike) on April 3. One chapter has the title, “Whitney Houston — The Untold Truth”.
Among Brown’s accusations: “I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney… I had experimented with other drugs, but marijuana was my drug of choice.” The singer continues to blame his numerous ’90s drug addictions on his marriage to Houston: “At one point in my life, I used drugs uncontrollably. I was using everything I could get my hands on, from cocaine to heroin, weed and cooked cocaine.”
Brown, 39, also claims in the book that he and Houston “got married for all the wrong reasons” and that the union was “doomed from the very beginning”. He adds: “Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married… to clean up her image.”
You have to wonder about that last claim, since Brown had already had several run-ins with the law before he met Houston in 1989, and he also had fathered illegitimate children with three different women. Maybe since the divorce, he’s discovered some more interesting drugs?
In response to Brown’s smear campaign, Houston’s representative sent a press statement to People. “Miss Houston is sad that Bobby feels he needs to say such things,” the statement said, “but she chooses to take the high road and will not speak badly about the father of her child, even if it’s to set the record straight.”
Brown admits in the book that he shared responsibility for the marriage’s problems. “Women are always throwing themselves at you [when you’re a star]. I’m only human, so I would make the mistake and bite the hook sometimes. I let the testosterone take over,” he writes. In addition, he claims to have been involved with Madonna and Janet Jackson before his relationship with Houston.
Brown and Houston, 44, married in July 1992. Their marriage was rife with scandals, from alcohol and drug abuse to arrests for physical assault and drunk driving before their separation in 2006. They have a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, now 15.
Let’s hope that Brown and Houston will learn to let go of their issues with each other and move on with their post-divorce lives — especially for their daughter’s sake. Click here for a Los Angeles Marriage, Family and Child Therapist’s tips on dealing with conflict.
