It looks like Donnie Wahlberg’s marriage no longer has The Right Stuff.
The actor and New Kids on the Block singer filed for divorce on August 13 in Ventura County, Los Angeles — while his wife of nearly nine years, Kim Wahlberg (nee Fey), did the exact same thing in Los Angeles Superior Court. Kim Wahlberg cited irreconcilable differences in her petition.
The Wahlbergs have been breaking up Step by Step for the past while, in fact. The court documents claim that the couple has been living separately since January, according to E! Online. Meanwhile, Wahlberg’s publicist told E! News that the Wahlbergs “have been separated for almost a year but remain close friends” in confirming the divorce.
Wahlberg and his wife have two sons, Alexander Xavier, 15, and Elijah Hendrix, 7. Kim Wahlberg, 39, wants sole legal and physical custody of the children along with full visitation rights for her soon-to-be-ex. In addition, she’s seeking alimony and attorney’s fees from Wahlberg.
The couple, both of whom are 39, married on August 20, 1999.
Donnie Wahlberg joined New Kids on the Block when he was 15. The group became a huge pop sensation in the late ’80s and early ’90s, with hits like “Hangin’ Tough”, “Cover Girl”, and “Tonight”. Wahlberg became known as the “bad boy” of the group and was even arrested for allegedly committing arson at one point. The group broke up in 1994, after which Wahlberg began an acting career (following the steps of his younger brother, Mark Wahlberg). His screen credits include Ransom, The Sixth Sense, and three of the Saw movies, and he’ll soon be appearing alongside acting heavyweights Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Righteous Kill.
He’s also attempting a musical comeback with his old bandmates. New Kids on the Block reunited earlier this year and have released two new songs, “Summertime” and “Single”. The group plans to release a new album of original material, Block, on September 2 and then begin a North American concert tour on September 18.
This was Wahlberg’s first marriage.
