Social media has changed the way we communicate in so many ways, allowing us to reconnect with lost friends, catch up with old flames, and – most recently – serve our estranged spouses with divorce papers. A New York City judge has ruled that a Brooklyn nurse can legally file for divorce from her husband through a Facebook message.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Matthew Cooper ruled in support of 26-year-old Ellanora Baidoo sending her estranged spouse divorce papers via Facebook, according to the New York Daily News. The ruling permits Baidoo to legally serve her husband with a divorce summons using a private Facebook message.
“This transmittal shall be repeated by plaintiff’s attorney to defendant once a week for three consecutive weeks or until acknowledged,” states the ruling. Baidoo’s lawyer will use his client’s account while attempting to contact her absentee spouse.
Baidoo’s husband, Victor Sena Blood-Dzraku, has only been in contact with his wife via Facebook and phone calls throughout the duration of their marriage. He reportedly has no permanent address and is proving quite difficult to track down.
According to Baidoo’s divorce attorney, Andrew Spinnell, they “tried everything, including hiring a private detective” to locate Blood-Dzraku, but were ultimately unsuccessful.
The couple wed in 2009, but the relationship quickly deteriorated when the husband broke both his first matrimonial promise and his wife’s trust by changing his mind and refusing to hold the traditional Ghanaian ceremony she had wanted. Both parties are from Ghana and Baidoo had wanted their families to attend.
The first Facebook message to Blood-Dzraku was sent last week, but he has yet to respond to Baidoo’s divorce filing.
