Although the dominant news from Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards was Britney Spears’ infamous comeback attempt, the real drama was unfolding in the audience, apparently over another sexy star.
Pamela Anderson’s two ex-husbands, rocker Kid Rock and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, got into an angry scuffle during Alicia Keys’ performance at the awards ceremony in Las Vegas. A short clip of the fight aired on the MTV broadcast, showing the musicians shouting at each other as security guards pulled them apart and escorted them out of the theater.
The specific reasons for the hullaballoo never became clear, and what the men said wasn’t audible in the footage. But the incident prompted rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs to joke from the audience, “We gotta stop the violence in rock and roll.”
Plain White Ts singer Tom Higginson witnessed the altercation. “There were no fists, they were just holding each other,” he told Reuters. “Security had to break them up.” Other eyewitness accounts pegged Kid Rock (whose real name is Robert Ritchie) as the instigator and primary aggressor.
Vegas police issued Rock, 36, a citation for misdemeanor battery. He is due to enter a plea in court within the next five weeks. This isn’t his first run-in with the law this year; a Michigan woman accused him in March of violent behavior toward her, but prosecutors dismissed the charges due to lack of evidence.
Rock and Anderson filed for divorce in November of last year. They had only been married for four months. The Baywatch star had divorced Lee, now 43, in 1998 after three years of marriage and two children.
No matter who began the fight, both Rock and Lee might want to count to ten and then read this article about how to manage your anger after divorce.
