You wonder if the only personal relationship Paris Hilton can hold onto on a long-term basis is Tinkerbell the Chihuahua. Reports have confirmed that the notorious socialite, heiress, and reality-TV star had split from her boyfriend of about nine months, Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden.
After a contestant on Hilton’s current series My New BFF leaked the news to Life & Style magazine, Hilton’s publicist, Alanna McCarthy, told the Associated Press on November 19 that the couple had indeed parted and “remain very good friends”.
This may come as a surprise to Hilton fans, as many had been expecting the couple to announce their engagement. In May, Hilton stated on the Late Show with David Letterman that she intended to marry the rock musician; she also accompanied Madden on his band’s world tour, and the media photographed the pair wearing rings with each other’s initials. According to Hello!, Madden recently referred to Hilton as “wife or serious girlfriend material”. (Evidently, she’s done a great job of hiding her history of impaired driving and homemade sex videos from him…)
“I wear my feelings on my sleeve. I’m very open about how in love I am,” Hello! quoted Madden as having said in October. “Paris and I are very happy.”
However, rumors began to fly earlier this week when Hilton, 27, was photographed partying with a former boyfriend, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos III, in Miami. “Stavros looked thrilled to see Paris again,” an anonymous source told The Sun, “and was spotted stroking her hair. They then looked deep in conversation.”
Vanessa Fontana, a former “pet” of Hilton’s on My New BFF who has not yet been eliminated from the competition, revealed the split only hours after McCarthy had claimed that Hilton and Madden were still an item.
“Sadly, it’s true,” Fontana told Life & Style. “Paris and Benji have split. I love Paris, and I just want her to be happy. I think that they’ll be better as friends.” She added that Hilton’s recent encounter with Niarchos had nothing to do with the breakup: “Nobody else is involved. Paris and Benji were loyal and faithful to each other. I was with Paris in Miami, and Stavros came over to our table, and the two of them talked for literally two minutes. It was a friendly conversation. They definitely did not hook up.”
Another source close to the former couple told People: “[Hilton] is saddened by the break-up, but they’re just too different and they wanted different things in life. He was loyal and sweet, but it was time to take a break.” In reference to Hilton and Niarchos, the same source said: “In no way are they romantic, nor do they want to get back together.”
E! Online quoted yet another source: “She was just so busy lately, and her work and travel schedule made it difficult for them to be together.”
Benji Madden, 29, helped form Good Charlotte in 1996 with his twin brother, singer Joel Madden (who has a daughter with Hilton’s on-again-off-again friend and The Simple Life co-star Nicole Richie). Both brothers also are part of an experimental hip-hop group called The Dead Executives. Benji Madden was engaged to Australian pop star Sophie Monk before hooking up with Hilton.
Paris Hilton has previously been engaged to model Jason Shaw and to another Greek shipping heir, Paris Latsis. She is a grandchild of billionaire Hilton Hotel founder Conrad Hilton.
