After 11 straight years of increases, the number of spouses who divorced in Portugal fell last year.
That’s according to data from Portugal’s
General Board for Justice Statistics (DGEJ), which noted that the
18,959 divorces filed across the country in 2011 were 581 less than
2010.
Some experts suggest that Portugal’s
current economic challenges are convincing more couples to stay
together – or simply making it prohibitively expensive to split;
something that many North American couples have and are continuing to experience.
Still, Portugal’s
declining (at least for now) divorce rate is still well above the
European average, with Portuguese couples divorcing at three times the
rate of their Italian counterparts, and four times that of their
Irish counterparts.
Across the EU, Portugal ranks fifth highest in divorce rate, Belgium, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Denmark.
