Movie icon Robert Redford has tied the knot for the second time — to his longtime girlfriend, 51-year-old German abstract artist Sibylle Szaggars.
“The ceremony was very important to them,” Pastor Frank Engelbrecht, of Hamburg’s St. Catherine Church, told the Abendblatt today. Pastor Engelbrecht conducted the ceremony in German, which Redford understands.
The couple plans to hold an “official” wedding party in September, in Mexico.
This is the second marriage for both Redford, 72, and Szaggers, who have been together since 1996. Their primary home is in rural Utah. Redford’s first marriage was to Lola van Wagenen, from 1958 to 1985.
Robert Redford’s best-known films as an actor include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All the President’s Men, The Natural and Out of Africa. But he also has a top reputation as a director, having won an Oscar in 1981 for Ordinary People plus critical acclaim for A River Runs through It, Quiz Show, and The Horse Whisperer. Redford helped to found the Sundance Film Festival, which is one of the world’s top showcases for independent filmmakers.
