Many years ago, Sesame Street’s Kermit the Frog reminded us that it’s not easy being green. (And I suppose that being Miss Piggy’s SO wasn’t a cakewalk, either.)
Now, it’s Kermit’s charming Muppet pal Abby Cadabby — a friendly and rather psychedelic-looking bright pink fairy, for the uninitiated — who is charged with the task of telling us something new: that it’s not easy when your parents divorce.
As part of a Sesame Street project entitled Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce, Abby Cadabby and one of the neighborhood’s original residents Gordon (played by actor Gordon Robinson) talk about how she lives in two homes now — one belonging to her mom, and the other to her dad.
This isn’t the first time that the denizens of Sesame Street have tried to tackle the thorny issue of divorce.
In the early 90s, Mr. Snuffleupagus — first name Aloysius, and known to his peeps in the ‘hood as Snuffy — was tapped to talk about his parent’s (don’t ask…) divorce. However, the attempt was quickly cancelled after viewers found it a bit too depressing.
With this latest effort, the folks at the Children’s Television Workshop have decided to put Abby Cadabby’s parent‘s divorce in the past, so that she can reflect upon it in a more matter-of-fact way.
It’s unclear whether this approach will receive a warmer response, or will be brought to us by the letter R for Retry.
