Whoa, Nelly! Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado has been keeping a big secret for the past three months, but she’s finally decided to come out and Say It Right.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada that she secretly married fiancé Demacio “Demo” Castellon during the summer. People had reported their engagement on July 5, and rumors about an unreported wedding began flying in recent weeks after Furtado was spotted in Miami wearing a new diamond ring.
Castellon is a Cuban sound engineer who met Furtado when he worked on her 2006 album Loose.
“We got married [on] July 19. I love it,” Furtado said in the ET Canada interview, which aired on TV on October 17. “It’s a nice phase of my life.” She added, “I just feel kind of free and relaxed and more in tune with trying not to be so stressed out. I’m trying to enjoy things a little more.”
Furtado, 29, has a four-year-old daughter, Nevis, from a previous four-year relationship with disk jockey Jasper Gahunia; he and the singer split up in 2005 but have reportedly remained good friends.
Nelly Furtado, who hails from Victoria, British Columbia but also has a strong Portuguese background, hit the big time in 2000 with her hit single, “I’m like a Bird”. Further international hits have included “Turn off the Light”, “Maneater”, and “Do It”.
