Less than two months after she reportedly blindsided him with a divorce filing, the split between Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise became final on Monday in New York City.
According to The Associated Press, records filed with an NYC court reveal that the case became closed on Monday. The ex-spouses had already agreed on a divorce settlement on July 9, in which Holmes, 33, received primary custody of their daughter, six-year-old Suri. The exact terms of the agreement are not public, because New York State lawrequires all divorce documents to stay sealed.
“She’s doing really great. She’s so strong, she’s an independent girl with her own ideas. She is fine,” an unnamed source close to Holmes told Us Weekly yesterday.
OK! magazine reports that Holmes moved all of her possessions out of the former couple’s Beverly Hills marital home last week. She has also been adjusting to life as a single mother, taking Suri out in public via taxis and commercial flights.
The actors married in Italy in November 2006, in a ceremony widely rumoured to have been arranged by the Church of Scientology (the Church’s leader, David Miscavige, was Cruise’s best man). To date, the Church has not commented on the couple’s divorce.
Katie Holmes, who filed for divorce in late June, is best known for her roles in the TV seriesDawson’s Creek and the movie Batman Begins; she has also starred in a Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.
Tom Cruise, who turned 50 last month, rose to superstardom during the 1980s in such movies as Taps, Risky Business and Top Gun. He earned more critical acclaim with the Oscar-winning hit Rain Man and later received Academy Award nominations for his roles inBorn on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia.
